Why our trips abroad mean sun, sea ... and overspending
ONLY one in three of us manages to stick to budgets we have set ourselves on holidays, a survey has found.
And the average amount tourists go over-budget is £212 per couple, according to the poll of 2,081 adults.
But despite this, only one in ten of those planning a trip abroad this year said they were going to increase their budget.
Andrew Brown, of Post Office Travel Money, which the survey was carried out for, said: ‘Holidaymakers seem to bust their budgets year after year.
‘The latest research findings suggest holidaymakers start with good intentions by setting a budget but then let go of the purse strings once they reach their resort.
‘Careful budgeting will save money in the long run because there are so many ways in which tourists can fall prey to the holiday money trap.’
Holidaymakers said Spain, its Balearic Islands and Turkey were some of the destinations that offered the best value, while bottom of the list were France, Italy and Dubai. But that hasn’t stopped 18 per cent of those surveyed planning a trip to France, while 17 per cent said they would be heading to Italy.
