Three hurt in helicopter crash horror
A MAN is fighting for his life after a helicopter crashed at an airfield yesterday.
Two other men in the aircraft were injured in the accident at Wycombe Air Park in Buckinghamshire around 9.30am.
An off-duty paramedic waiting for a flying lesson saw the crash and helped the injured as he waited for ambulances to arrive. The men inside the helicopter were either pulled from the wreckage by airfield crews or managed to free themselves, emergency services said.
The most badly hurt was said to have ‘life-threatening injuries’. He is being treated at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. A second man was taken to the hospital with serious leg, chest, abdominal, head and shoulder injuries.
The third was taken to Wexham Park Hospital in Slough, Berkshire, with back injuries, which were less serious.
Trainee pilots and ground crew watched in horror as the crash happened at the airfield near High Wycombe. The badly damaged helicopter was left on its side with its rotors broken. One landing-skid had broken off and the windows were smashed.
Staff at Wycombe Air Park, also known as Booker Airfield, refused to comment and it is not yet clear how the crash happened. The Air Accident Investigation Branch has begun an inquiry.
