Sunderland ask Moyes to stay

- CRAIG HOPE

DAVID MOYES says Sunderland owner Ellis Short has asked him to stay on as manager despite their relegation from the Premier League.

But Moyes wants to know more about the club’s plans for the Championship, with more talks planned for the summer.

‘Ellis and the board want me to stay. We have to find a way to get things correct,’ he said. ‘ I know what needs to be done to get back in the Premier League, but we’ve only had initial talks.’

Moyes has been criti- cised for declaring in August that his side faced a relegation battle but he said: ‘When I sat here right at the start of the season, it felt like every supporter wanted David Moyes as manager.

‘There is a job to be done here. We wish it wasn’t in this way, but every Sunderland fan was well aware that there had to be a lot done to fix things from the foundations up.

‘When I look back on it I was very honest, forthright, told people what I thought (about a relegation threat).’
