Redknapp rescues Blues

- RALPH ELLIS at Ashton Gate

HARRY REDKNAPP feels 17 rather than 70 after saving Birmingham — but will not say whether he will stay on.

The veteran boss skipped down the touchline to join in the celebrations after a Che Adams goal on 16 minutes gave Redknapp a second win in three games — the same amount won by Gianfranco Zola in 24.

‘I was buzzing at the end. When you get a result like that the enthusiasm is still there and in my heart I’m a 17-year-old, I don’t feel like 70,’ he said.

Despite hearing the near 2,500 travelling fans chant his name, Redknapp said he will not stay unless mysterious owners Trillion Trophy Asia prove their ambition. ‘I have a situation in my life where I am not chasing work,’ he said. ‘If they ask I would have a chat and see what their ambitions are and if they want to have a go next year I would be interested,’ he said.

That might yet open the door for former Bristol City manager Steve Cotterill.

His coaching has played a key part in the side keeping two clean sheets in a row.

‘The players have given absolutely everything and Steve has done a great job,’ added Redknapp.

‘I don’t know what was wrong before, I’m a big fan of Gianfranco, but I have just tried to make the players confident and believe in themselves and tell them how good they are.’

Adams, 20, who started in non-League football, has benefited from the boost.

He showed great composure as he chased Lukas Jutkiewicz’s through ball and turned defender Aden Flint before steering the ball past keeper Fabian Giefer.

Flint volleyed over during six minutes of added time, before referee Lee Mason blew the whistle which prompted Redknapp’s jig.
