Oh God, you’re joking! Model stunned as she’s jailed over 90mph police chase
AN underwear model who led police on a 90mph chase before crashing into a house exclaimed ‘You’re joking’ after she found out she was being sent to prison.
Mother-of-one Yasmin Katir, 27, reached speeds three times the 30mph limit before smashing her friend’s car into a wall.
She put her head in her hands and said as she was led from the dock: ‘I’m going to jail? Oh my God. You’re joking.’
Katir claimed she was just borrowing the BMW and was egged on by a friend. But Judge Sean Morris told her she was lucky not to be facing a manslaughter charge.
He said: ‘Anyone who drives like a lunatic when there are blue lights behind must
understand that they are putting life at risk. I’m not bothered about your life. I’m bothered about innocent lives and a policeman’s life.’
Teesside Crown Court heard Katir took her friend’s £9,500 BMW without his permission for two days after he invited her to his home for a social evening on March 26. After trying to contact Katir, the man called police who spotted and pursued the car just after 3.45am on March 28.
When she was finally caught, Katir, from Stockton-on-Tees, claimed she was egged on by a passenger and said she was ‘very sorry’. She admitted dangerous driving, aggravated vehicle taking and having no insurance. She was previously convicted for drink-driving and driving without insurance in 2012.
Judge Morris told Katir: ‘You took off and drove like a lunatic through extremely narrow streets.’
He described footage of the chase, which saw her driving around blind bends at 50mph, as ‘terrifying’.
Jailing her for four months, he said: ‘I’m reducing [the sentence] because you are a mother, but that doesn’t give you a get-outof-jail-free card.’ She was also banned from driving for three years and two months.
