WHEN John ‘Duke’ Wayne was seriously ill on a cancer ward at the general hospital in Fruit Street, Boston, Kirk sent him a telegram: ‘Dear John, I didn’t want to write to you on Fruit Street. I have been waiting for you to move to Macho Alley. What the hell... get well soon.’
