Battle of the First Ladies... round 2!
THE tone for one of the most anticipated battles in global politics was set earlier this week.
And after sizing up each other’s wardrobes during a Nato summit on Thursday, first ladies Melania Trump and Brigitte Macron came face-to-face again yesterday.
Accompanying her husband to the G7 meeting in Sicily, 47-year-old Mrs Trump seemed determined to outshine her French counterpart in a stunning Dolce and Gabbana floral coat worth £38,550.
There appeared no need for the former model to bother with accessories, as her matching embellished clutch bag was statement enough.
Meanwhile Mrs Macron seemed unfazed by her challenger from the US, letting her cool sophistication shine through with a low-key outfit of red jumper and white skinny jeans. The asymmetric popper detail on the shoulder seemed to show off her understated Parisian style.
It was a stark contrast to the £2,200 Louis Vuitton mini-dress she wore on Thursday, which made for a chic alternative to Mrs Trump’s rather bland Maison Ullens skirt suit.
They were joined yesterday by Akie Abe, the wife of the Japanese prime minister, and Emanuela Mauro, the wife of the Italian premier.
Mrs Macron – who at 64 is more than 24 years older than her French President husband Emmanuel Macron – did not pose for a photo with her fellow G7 spouses on the balcony of the Chierici Palace in Catania, despite arriving with them. Also among the group was German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s husband Joachim Sauer, who dressed for the heat in a casual blue linen blazer.
The G7 leaders were holding a summit in Italy to discuss topics including climate change, trade and migration. While US President Donald Trump has met all the leaders one-to-one, this was the first time all seven were sitting around the same table.
