Christianity’s links to terror, by Welby
CHRISTIANITY can be linked to terrorism in the same way that Islam can, the Archbishop of Canterbury suggested.
Justin Welby said all major faiths had ‘similar theological traditions’ to the extremist strains of Islam.
He said there had been a ‘huge increase’ in attacks by all religious believers on each other over the past two decades, adding: ‘We need to counter that within our own tradition.’
Archbishop Welby said on Radio 4’s Today programme that, historically, Christianity had ‘a dark side’.
He said it was wrong to say terrorism is nothing to do with Islam. But he added: ‘I don’t think it is getting us anywhere more than if we said Srebrenica had nothing to do with Christianity. I think we need to say we have to take responsibility.’
The massacre of thousands of Muslims at Srebrenica in 1995 during the Balkan wars was carried out by Bosnian Serbs, who are from an Orthodox Christian background.
Terrorism expert Professor Anthony Glees said: ‘If we are all guilty then you quickly find none are guilty. This is very distasteful.’
