Golfer killed by lightning bolt

A grAndfAthe­r died after being struck by lightning while playing golf.

Philip Shard, 60, suffered a cardiac arrest after being hit by the bolt while clutching a golf club, his family revealed yesterday.

the It consultant, pictured, was taken to hospital in a critical condition on May 27 but died last week. the odds of being killed by lightning are 300,000 to one.

Most golf clubs are made with a metal shaft of steel, titanium or carbon.

In the wake of the tragedy, fynn Valley golf Club in Suffolk has issued a warning to golfers to ‘take action at the first signs of any electrical activity’.

Paying tribute to the father of two and grandfathe­r of four, his family said: ‘Philip was a kind and loving gentleman, husband, father, grandpa and friend who will be sorely missed by all.’ his daughter elizabeth griggs added: ‘[dad] made an impression on everyone he met.’
