EXERCISE SABOTEUR

-

THE mistakes that could make your exercise regimen less effective. This week: on the golf course

GOLF has been linked to an extra five years of life and reduced risk of moer than 40 diseases including heart disease and cancer. But for optimum fitness and calorieburning results, you should ditch the buggy.

According to researchers at Rose Medical Center in Denver, in the U.S., during a nine-hole game a golfer riding a buggy will burn about 411 calories — but when that same golfer carried their own clubs and walked between the holes that rose to 721 calories.

To power things up further, Dr Andrew Murray, a sports and exercise medicine consultant at the University of Edinburgh, suggests speed golf. Here you not only aim for the lowest number of shots, you also get points for getting round the course in the fastest time. Competitors actually run while carrying their clubs.
