Harry will skipper England at Hampden

HARRY KANE will audition for the position as permanent England captain against Scotland tonight.

Kane will wear the armband for the first time in the crunch World Cup qualifier at Hampden Park.

Sportsmail were first to reveal Gareth Southgate’s desire to make the Tottenham striker the captain on November 9.

And the England boss has wasted no time in handing Kane the arm- band on a night the striker plays his first game under Southgate.

Kane, 23, will be Southgate’s fifth captain in seven games, yet the England manager has revealed he does want a permanent skipper despite hinting that he was prepared to do away with the notion of a full-time captain.

‘Yes, I think you have to have a permanent captain,’ said Southgate, who is considerin­g playing a 3-4-3 formation tonight.

‘You have to decide, OK, this is

what we’re going to do. But it was important, and is important at the moment, to develop a group first. ‘Then, when we’ve got strength in various levels of leadership, everybody can see the importance of their role in the team. Harry’s not been with us up to this point. His mentality is excellent. He has a very good view of the game. He’s keen to lead.’ Kane tweeted last night of his elevation to the captaincy: ‘It will be one of the proudest moments of my life leading the team out tomorrow!’ Kane, Dele Alli and Raheem Sterling will all play in attacking roles at Hampden Park, with Adam Lallana behind and Eric Dier as a holding midfielder. Ryan Bertrand and Kyle Walker will fill the two wide defensive roles, with Gary Cahill, John Stones and Chris Smalling likely to play in defence. Joe Hart will start in goal.
