Unpopular Puel sacked by Saints
SOUTHAMPTON sacked manager Claude Puel last night.
The club are eyeing Thomas Tuchel, who left Borussia Dortmund a fortnight ago after clashing with the German club’s board, as a replacement.
Puel, 55, was sacked after a hugely disappointing season masked by reaching the EFL Cup final. The Saints finished eighth in the Premier League but were knocked out of the Europa League in the group stages.
Puel, appointed last summer to replace Ronald Koeman, clashed with players and grew wildly unpopular with fans due to his negative tactics.
‘We wish Claude well for the future,’ Southampton said in a statement. ‘We are confident that we will find the right fit in line with the long-term vision of the club.’
