We will sabotage any pact with the DUP, vows Adams

-

GERRY Adams threatened to sabotage Theresa May’s plan to remain Prime Minister last night. The Sinn Fein leader said after meeting Mrs May at No 10 that he had told her ‘very directly’ that her proposed pact with the Democratic Unionist Party was in breach of the Good Friday Agreement which helped deliver peace in Northern Ireland.

Mrs May has been in talks with the DUP about shoring up a minority Tory government. Yesterday it was announced that the Queen’s Speech will take place on Wednesday as she is confident of receiving their support even if a deal has not been finalised.

She met all Northern Ireland political parties in an attempt to allay concerns over the deal, but Adams warned: ‘A little side bargain to keep Theresa May in power, a temporary little arrangement, will not have any integrity and certainly is not as important as the integrity and the needs of the people who live in Ireland and particularly the north of Ireland.’

Explaining that Sinn Fein would continue its policy of not taking its seats in Westminster, he said: ‘We’re Irish republicans.’ With a smile on his face, he added: ‘We won’t take an oath of allegiance to the English Queen... no harm to her.’

The Queen’s cousin, Lord Mountbatten, was murdered by the IRA in Ireland in 1979.
