I’m not just his ‘baby mama’, says Jagger’s ballerina lover
Sir Mick Jagger’s girlfriend, ballerina Melanie Hamrick, has spoken for the first time about their relationship and being mother to his six-month-old son.
‘i definitely don’t think of myself as a “baby mama”,’ says the American dancer. ‘Yes, in the technical sense, i’m not married to the father of my child. But i am in a great, wonderful relationship with him.
‘i have a career. i work hard. Since i was 18, i’ve supported myself. i’ve put my whole life into my work.
‘ i dance with one of the most well-known ballet companies in the world. To be put in that category is a little insulting. And it’s insulting to my boyfriend.’
At 30, Hamrick is 43 years Jagger’s junior. The singer met Hamrick on the Stones’ tour in Japan, three weeks before his then partner, fashion designer L’Wren Scott, killed herself in 2014. He has reportedly bought her a £5 million town house in New York.
Miss Hamrick also reveals that she battled with weight issues before becoming pregnant with Deveraux.
‘i struggled in my teenage years with weight and even a couple of times at American Ballet Theatre . . . when you’re working really hard and the weight is coming off and they are rewarding you . . . You’re feeling thin, therefore you are dancing better because in a ballerina’s mind you are like, “i want to be thin, i want to be thin.” You get more roles. it’s a cycle.
‘i did go through a phase where they said to me: “Hey, we aren’t going to lie, you are too thin.” Eventually, it will affect your shows. You need to be able to be athletic.’
Now she’s a mum, she says she’s cured of that obsession. ‘i want to give him [the baby] the best, so therefore i want to take care of myself better. i would never have thought i would feel this great at this weight.
‘Now, i am like: “i had a baby and i feel really great and i look hot.” i am more proud of my body.’
Speaking to Marie Claire she adds that Deveraux listens to Mozart every morning and perks up whenever she plays the rolling Stones.
