Oh, what a slice! Kate sports new short cut at Wimbledon Sarah Vine’s verdict

- By Ben Wilkinson and Rebecca English

FOR tennis fans worrying a sore hip might hold Andy Murray back, it was a big relief.

The world number one easily won his first match at Wimbledon yesterday in front of his pregnant wife Kim and Kate Middleton.

And while he appeared to be limping during the match against 20-yearold tattooed Russian newcomer Alexander Bublik, he later insisted he was not in any pain and ‘felt good’.

As he leapt about Centre Court, up in the stands the Duchess of Cambridge was also causing something of a stir – as she unveiled a much shorter hairstyle called a ‘lob’, or long bob.

The 35-year-old, who was attending the tournament as royal patron for the first time, looked fashionable in a £1,650 Dolce & Gabbana dress, paired with a £1,200 Victoria Beckham handbag, £152 Bulgari sunglasses, Oscar de la Renta earrings and £62 black sandals from high street store Office, replacing her usual safe nude heels.

Mrs Murray, 29, who is pregnant with the couple’s second child, also looked radiant in a tropical print Zara dress with elbow-length sleeves.

Murray, who was seen wincing in practice sessions, also seemed to be in discomfort between points yesterday as he beat Bublik, who is ranked 135th, in straight sets of 6-1, 6-4, 6-2.

But the 30-year-old said he has ‘no idea’ why that was, saying: ‘My hip Victory! Andy Murray on Centre Court and, right, his wife Kim felt good. It’s a little bit sore, but I was moving really good on the court.’

He added that he was ‘a bit nervous’ before the match, saying: ‘I hadn’t been able to do as much as I would have liked in the build-up. Once I got out there and got the early break, I felt good. Considering how I felt five, six days ago, it was really positive.’

Bublik said Murray did not appear injured, adding: ‘He was making unreal shots [and] playing unbelievably.’

Tomorrow Murray will face Dustin Brown in the second round – a 6ft 5in German- Jamaican with dreadlocks. The world number 97 caused upset in 2015 when he beat Rafael Nadal.
