Sisters hit blistering form

- CARA SLOMAN

FORMER England international Tara Watters and Mandy Miller are emerging as a dominant sister act in the Daily Mail Foursomes, after they eased past Royal Wimbledon to book Muswell Hill a place in the fifth round. The siblings were in blistering form, reeling off three birdies in four holes, to knock out Claire Byrd and Sarah Tilling, 6&4 at home on the north London course. This has been a rare chance for Watters, a runner-up at the English Match Play Championship in 2009 and again a year later, to team up with her sister. She said: ‘When we’ve played together recently we’ve complemented each other’s game, which is really handy. ‘We do enjoy playing together, but we don’t get to do it very much because I’m in other tournaments and she is doing lots of club and county competitions.’ Watters, 32, captained England to victory in the 2010 Nations Cup in France, but never imagined the duo would still be in with a chance of reaching the October finals at Marriott St Pierre. She admitted: ‘It’s taken me by surprise. We’re giving quite a high amount of shots. Sometimes this can work in your favour, as your opponents get slightly intimidated and that makes them nervous.’ She took up the sport at 15, and Miller, 48, started playing a few years later. ‘My sister hated golf,’ said Watters. ‘Now she loves it. You can’t get her off the course.’ Next up for the pairing in the world’s largest golf tournament is a home tie against Sundridge Park and Watters stressed: ‘I really do enjoy foursomes golf. When you both are playing well it’s a great feeling.’
