Attacked outside pub by two men
NIGEL Evans was accused of being a terrorist and attacked while on the campaign trail.
The Ribble Valley MP, who retained the Lancashire seat, said he had canvassed in numerous general elections and by-elections but was shocked at the abuse.
Mr Evans, 59, called the police after he was attacked at the New Inn pub in Clitheroe on St George’s Day.
He said a man repeatedly screamed: ‘You are a terrorist, child murderer, you are not welcome here.’ Then another man called him a ‘c***’ before pushing him.
He said: ‘I was startled. For me this was a new low in campaigning. When I went to London after the election, I learned I was not alone.
‘Other Tory candidates had been on the receiving end of base and vile taunts.
‘This was not the kinder, gentler politics I believed we were going to get after the tragic death of Jo Cox.’
