Cable: Pay students £1k a year
SIR Vince Cable is considering a proposal to pay students to go to university when he is made leader of the Liberal Democrats next week, it was claimed last night.
It follows a government shake-up in Wales, where students are due to be handed a means-tested grant of at least £1,000 for living costs.
There will also be an expanded loan system to cover tuition fees. Now Sir Vince is sympathetic to a similar scheme being rolled out in England, the Daily Telegraph reported. A spokesman for Sir Vince told the newspaper: ‘Vince thinks there should be a revision to the scheme and that some form of grant is necessary.’
He is expected to be named Lib Dem leader on Wednesday, replacing Tim Farron.
