Now THAT’S a royal wave! How Charlotte stole the show from shy George

-

EVERY parent knows what it’s like to arrive after a long journey with young children who are feeling a little shy.

And the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge faced the same problem yesterday when they touched down in Poland after a two-hour flight on a private jet from the UK.

Prince George and little sister Princess Charlotte appeared reluctant to step into the Warsaw rain at the start of the royals’ five- day European tour. But while two-year- old Charlotte, who had to be carried down the plane’s steps by her mother, soon seemed to come out of her shell, the story was rather different for her older brother.

George, who turns four on Saturday, was eventually coaxed down the jet’s stairs by William.

But he kept his hand in his pocket, kicked the floor and repeatedly tugged his father’s arm as they met dignitaries including Jonathan Knott, Brit-

ain’s ambassador to Poland. At one point William had to offer some words of encouragement to the pouting prince.

George could hardly be blamed for appearing so downbeat, after leaving 25C ( 77F) sunshine in London for a damp and overcast Warsaw.

He may have also been reluctant to leave the luxury of their £20million jet, chartered for the journey, which boasts a twoscreen state-of-the-art entertainment system. But the sight of the young ambassador having to be coaxed into action was not quite the image the Foreign Office hoped to project during the trip, which is widely regarded as a postBrexit royal charm offensive.

He was at least immaculately turned out for the occasion, with the future king in a checked shirt tucked into smart navy shorts.

His sunnier sister wore a red and white summer dress with matching shoes and a red bow in her hair. Kate looked chic in a £2,000 white Alexander McQueen peplum dress, while William wore a navy suit and red tie.

The duchess’s outfit also gave a subtle nod to the Polish flag, in the shape of her ruby and diamond jewellery, paired with a red clutch.

William and Kate have taken their children on tour before, travelling to Canada with them last year. But this trip is another milestone in Charlotte and George’s lives – as it is the first time they have been on an official tour of Europe.
