EMMA WATSON is the beauty, and Dan Stevens her well-disguised beast in an extravagant and joyful live-action version of the fairy tale. Its success is no mean feat, considering the high regard in which the 1991 animation is held.

AUSSIE Big Bash winner Michael Klinger — nickname ‘the Jewish Bradman’ — arrives at Canterbury as Gloucestershire captain. They topped the South Group last season, before going on to lose in their quarter-final.

WIDE-RANGING, occasionally cute new documentary about the lessons learned by young creatures in the wild. Its best moments include a cheetah cub being chased by a zebra and some lovely footage of penguin parents doing their best. (Sky 528, Virgin 264)
NORSE MARAUDERS The Vikings: Foe Or Friend? A Timewatch Guide, 9pm, BBC4
ALICE ROBERTS delves into the archive to see how our view of Vikings has changed. Intriguingly, it was not until these disparate clans left their homelands that they became ‘Vikings’. In old Norse, ‘viking’ means to sail in search of adventure (to go a-viking). NEW ROYALTY Kate: The Making Of A Modern Queen, 9pm, ITV3 AFTER the retirement of the Duke of Edinburgh later this year, the next generation of royals will become all the more prominent. This glossy new programme traces the rise of Kate Middleton (pictured) and speculates as to what kind of queen she might make.
JURY DRAMA Bull, 9pm, 5 USA
MICHAEL WEATHERLY, formerly of NCIS, plays uncannily perceptive jury consultant Dr Jason Bull in this new-to-Freeview legal drama based on the career of U.S.. talk show host Phil McGraw. Weatherly (pictured) is a very watchable star — he’s at least half matinee idol — and gives a good performance in a decent show that is sadly mired in cliches.
FREEVIEW FILM The Iceman, 9pm, Film4
MICHAEL SHANNON’S simmering presence works well in this biographical crime thriller. He’s Richard Kuklinski, a family man living a disturbing double life as a cold, calculating hit man.
SITCOM RERUN Uncle, 10pm, Dave
PREVIOUSLY on BBC3, this About A Boy-style comedy stars Nick Helm as a directionless musician, who is about to kill himself when his sister phones with a desperate childcare request. There’s an uncommon depth to the comedy here and some great musical numbers. The first season is also available on Netflix.
