Getting to grips with grab rails

-

WHEN you are having a new shower or walk-in bath fitted, it’s usually a simple decision to decide where to place it. Like as not, you’ll choose to have it fitted in the space where the old bathtub stood. But positioning grab rails can take rather more thought. When deciding, start by thinking about your daily bathing routine. Horizontal rails are very useful when pushing up from a sitting position and provide support when lowering, so they are often positioned close to seats. vertical rails can provide assistance when pulling up into a standing position. Inclined rails, fixed at a slight angle, can be helpful if you have weak or painful arms or wrists. The angle can support your forearm on the rail when pushing up, steadying you as you stand. Once up, your hand can travel up the rail to maintain the support. If you have a walk-in bath, a horizontal grab rail, fixed about 10cm above the bath rim, can provide valuable assistance when standing up in the bath. If you have a shower enclosure, a vertical rail can be helpful to give you support when stepping in and out. And a horizontal rail can also be useful at the side of a shower seat, to help you sit and stand. Everyone is unique, and it is best to discuss the position of grab rails during a no-obligation consultation, when you can talk through your personal requirements, see a design plan and make an informed decision on the best solution for you.
