Walking boots on as Theresa heads off for three weeks

- By John Stevens Deputy Political Editor

THERESA May is to take a threeweek walking holiday in Italy and Switzerland with husband Philip.

The Prime Minister will leave on Monday for five days in northern Italy, before breaking off to attend the centenary commemorations for the battle of Passchendaele in Belgium on July 31.

She will then depart for Switzerland – a favourite summer holiday destination over the years – for a further two weeks, before returning on August 14.

Mrs May joked on Wednesday that her fellow Tories may be relieved she is not returning to Snowdonia, where she made the fateful decision to call a snap election during a walking holiday at Easter.

‘I think there are many people who are grateful I’m going to the Alps and not to Wales again,’ she told LBC radio.

Her decision to take three consecutive weeks off following last month’s election disappointment makes her the first prime minister to do so since Tony Blair. In 2002, his family were guests at Sir Cliff Richard’s £3million Barbados mansion.

No 10 gave no details of where Mrs May will visit, but said: ‘She’s obviously a big fan of walking, walking will be a strong feature.’

Asked if she was taking three weeks off because she was ‘tired’, a spokesman said it had been a ‘productive and busy week’, adding: ‘The PM has been getting on with the job of government and, as you would expect, she will take a holiday.’
