New releases
THE BEACH BOYS: Sunshine Tomorrow (Capitol)
THE Beach Boys came back down to earth with a bump after 1966’s peerless Pet Sounds, and the two albums that arrived the following year — Smiley Smile and Wild Honey — were patchy. This sprawling double CD gives us demo versions of the homespun Smiley Smile and a new stereo mix of the soul-tinged Wild Honey. However, the deluge of studio snippets, out-takes and inferior live versions make this one for Beach Boys fanatics only.
DECLAN MCKENNA: What Do You Think About The Car? (Columbia)
HERTFORDSHIRE teen McKenna examines the joys and uncertainties of youth on a debut driven by chiming guitars, electronics and tuneful nods to the Lightning Seeds and early Blur. Opening track Humongous, which speeds up as it builds, is too busy, but the songs become more streamlined, with Bethlehem addressing hate crime and Brazil tackling a topic untouched in pop history — corruption at the world’s football governing body FIFA.
DAN CROLL: Emerging Adulthood (Communion)
TUTORED by Paul McCartney as a student at the ex-Beatle’s Liverpool arts academy, Dan Croll widens his outlook on a second album made in Atlanta with CeeLo Green sideman Ben Allen. Playing everything himself, the singer tends to overembellish, adding too many frills on Bad Boy and electronically treated riffs on 24. But his songwriting is maturing well, with Rebecca Hawley, of synth trio Stealing Sheep, adding vocal weight on Swim.
