7th Caddie’s stern words begins to work. Despite finding a bunker, gets a steadying par. +5

8th Into the crowd from the tee but recovers and holes long par putt. +5

9th First genuine birdie chance for a while but he hits it to the left. +5

10th His fourth par in a row, via the rough. Put the bunting out! +5

11th The rot is over. The driver is out. A birdie at last — his mood lifts. +4

12th Shrugging again as a birdie putt wriggles away. +4

13th Plenty of grit. Finds middle of the fairway. Birdie putt goes left. +4

14th A fine approach. But once again he fails to convert. +4

15th Eagle chance, pin high from 35ft. Manages a smile at a birdie. +3

16th He’s chipping well now. Holds an important putt. Par. Tail up. +3

17th Driver takes him 357 yards. Another eagle chance, but he taps in for birdie. +2

18th Huge cheers as he birdies from 15ft. What a turnaround that was. +1
