I won final £25k Mail prize after my husband lost out!

- By Xantha Leatham

ALL month it was her husband who had been doing the Daily Mail’s Treasure Hunt competition – with no luck.

So for the fourth and final chance to win £25,000, Barbara Jones decided she would be the one to send in their answers. And this time they won.

The 60- year- old admitted she needed some convincing that it wasn’t a wind-up when she got the call to say they had scooped the prize.

‘I didn’t believe it was true to begin with,’ she said. ‘You never expect to win things like this, and you never know anyone who has won.’

Throughout last month Mrs Jones and husband Steve, 58, from Burntwood in Staffordshire, had been working out the riddles that appeared daily in the newspaper to solve the final clue at the end of each week.

Mrs Jones emailed in their answer to last week’s puzzle – Durham – on Friday, and thought nothing more of it as she went to work as usual at her job selling new-build houses over the weekend. She received a call on Saturday telling her she had won and rang Mr Jones – who put a bottle of Champagne in the fridge so they could celebrate when she got home.

Mrs Jones said: ‘Steve has been emailing in the answers but this time I did it – perhaps I’m lucky.

‘I was left smiling all afternoon. We’ve both just been really giddy ever since. I enter the odd competition but have never won anything like this before.’

The couple, who buy the Daily Mail every day, plan to use the money to go on a cruise next year. Mrs Jones said: ‘We’ve never done a cruise so we thought it would be a nice thing to do now we have the money.

‘We’re just absolutely overjoyed. I may also have to indulge in a new handbag with some of the money, and Steve is looking to get the newest iPhone. It’s just brilliant.’

Their win concludes our monthlong Treasure Hunt challenge, which has had more than 250,000 entries and has seen four winners scoop £25,000 in cash or gold bars.
