I’ll be Happy Like A Fool if Smith wins!
RAIN is forecast to arrive during g Goodwood this afternoon — but t hopefully it will not start in time to inconvenience two of my bigger fancies.
HAPPY LIKE A FOOL is trained by US-based Wesley Ward, but she has remained in Newmarket since ce her second place to Heartache in the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot. That was a pretty good run and showed Happy Like A Fool has plenty of pace — but this course should play more to her strengths. She could be tough to peg back in the Molecomb Stakes under top American jockey Mike Smith. I’ve ridden
WINSTON C on the gallops and he seems to be progressing well. He was suited by the step up to a mile and a half last time, the distance of the Better Odds With Matchbook Betting Exchange Handicap, and he still looks to be at the right end of the handicap. Ribchester will be favourite for the feature race, the Sussex Stakes, a race in which he was third last year. He’s a top-class miler but all his wins have come on galloping tracks. That persuades me to go with
CHURCHILL. The winner of the English and Irish 2,000 Guineas was disappointing at Royal Ascot but I am prepared to accept trainer Aidan O’Brien’s reasoning that the son of Galileo struggled on a sweltering day when travelling from Ireland took its toll.
