Chairs that are just right

-

IF YOU have aches and pains, it’s important to find a chair that will be comfortable, while also supporting your joints. lo if you find it difficult to get out of your chair and have to use cushions to make it more comfortable, you should think about ordering one designed for your needs.

A high chair makes getting up easier, as you are halfway up already. Choose the highest chair that allows you to place your bare feet flat on the floor while sitting in it.

Painful joints can make it difficult to use the armrests. However, they can be as effective as a high chair at helping you to get up.

Check that the armrests are the right height, so that you don’t have to hunch your shoulders. And look for a good handgrip that you can wrap your fingers around to help you stand.

Or consider an electric riser recliner. this will lift you to a standing position by means of a motor and allow you to recline, which can bring positional relief from aches.

If there is a headrest, make sure it doesn’t push your head forward, as this will cause neck ache. the seat should be good quality foam, so avoid seats that sag like a hammock when you sit in them, or are too narrow or deep, as they will not give the right support. mhe single most important rule is to try before you buy. make your time, whether you are in a shop or have arranged a home demonstration.

Being able to raise your feet in bed can also help to relieve symptoms so that you have more function in the morning.

Breathlessness and backache are often eased by being able to raise the upper body at a slight angle in an adjustable bed, encouraging sounder sleep.
