Allahu Akbar terrorist kills two in Finland

- By Jim Norton

TWO people were killed and at least six others wounded in a mass stabbing in Finland yesterday.

It was unclear whether the savage attack in a busy market square in the south-western city of Turku was terror related but Finns were warned to stay at home as security was reinforced nationwide.

Witnesses told how the square was filled with screams as the attacker waved his knife in the air before he was shot in the thigh by police. He was arrested shortly after the stabbing at around 4.40pm and police said they were not looking for other suspects.

There were no further details about the two victims who died but the Finnish newspaper Ilta-Sanomat reported that one man and five women – including a mother with a pushchair – were injured. In a video purporting to show the aftermath of the attack, a scream of ‘Allahu Akbar’ – Arabic for ‘God is the greatest’ – can be heard as people flee.

Last night, investigators said it was too early to attribute the stabbings to international terrorism or link them to the attacks in Spain the previous day.

Finland’s terrorism threat level was raised in June after the security services said they were aware of attacks being planned. Wit- ness Kent Svensson told CNN: ‘This guy had this huge knife in his hand and several times he was stabbing this person.

‘People were running everywhere. He was turning around flinging his knife everywhere. There were people lying everywhere.

‘We were just talking about what happened in Barcelona. We thought we were safe in Finland. And then this happens in front of our eyes.’
