5 of the best HEALTHY BURGERS
Beef burgers are our favourite barbecue food, according to a survey by retail analyst Kanta Worldpanel. But you don’t need to stick to beef; here we suggest five healthy options to pop on the barbecue.
Goodlife Spicy Veg Beanburgers With Chipotle
£2.49 for four, ocado.com Per burger: Calories, 219; saturates, 0.7g; sugars, 1.9g; fibre, 7g; protein, 5.7g; salt, 0.31g. THESE vegan burgers, made with kidney beans, provide slow-release carbs, protein and nearly a quarter of your recommended daily amount of fibre per burger. They’re low in salt but not for weight watchers thanks to added rapeseed oil.
Morrisons BBQ Infused Salmon & Cod Burgers
£2 for two Per burger: calories, 135; saturates, 0.6g; sugars, 7.4g; fibre, 0.8g; protein, 14.2g; salt, 1.14g. INFUSED with herbs and spices, these are low in saturated fat, but boost your intake of heart-healthy omega 3 fats. A lower calorie option than beef.
Tesco British Turkey Burgers
£2.50 for four Per burger: Calories, 124; saturates, 0.8g; sugars, 0.8g; fibre, 0.2g, protein, 21g; salt, 1.2g. MADE with 88 per cent turkey, these are high in appetite-curbing protein and low in saturated fat. Turkey supplies vitamins B12 and B6, needed for a healthy nervous system; and zinc, which plays a role in fertility.
Sainsbury’s Taste The Difference Venison
£3.50 for two burgers Per burger: Calories, 232; saturates, 4g; sugars, 0.9g; fibre, 0.9g; protein, 40g; salt, 1.24g. VENISON is much lower in saturated fat than beef — these burgers supply about half the amount in some premium beef burgers. One of these also has over a third of your daily needs of anaemia-protective iron.
Linda McCartney’s Vegetarian ¼ lb Burgers
£2 for two Per burger: Calories, 232; saturates, 0.9g; sugars, 1.8g; fibre, 2.5g; protein, 18.2g; salt, 1g. SOYA-BASED, these are low in saturated fat yet have a meaty texture. Each burger has a similar amount of fibre to a slice of wholemeal bread, but there’s no waistline advantage to them over beef burgers, as rapeseed oil keeps them juicy.
