HOW ENGLAND WERE LET OFF THE HOOK

- LAWRENCE BOOTH

YESTERDAY saw a muchimproved display from the West Indies but shoddy catching in the field still cost them dear — with four chances going down... JOE ROOT has only eight when he fiddles Shannon Gabriel low to Kieran Powell at first slip. Powell is in position for the catch, but can’t hold on (below). England would have been 44 for four. BEN STOKES, on nine, thick-edges a drive off Kemar Roach high towards Kraigg Brathwaite at second slip. But the ball powers through his hands and away for four. England would have been 100 for five. NOW on 98, Stokes tries to reach his century by hitting Roach through the leg side. But he picks out Gabriel at mid-on — who drops a sitter. Stokes works the next ball for two to bring up his ton. STUART BROAD edges Gabriel to keeper Shane Dowrich, who somehow grasses the ball. But Gabriel yorks Broad for a duck moments later.
