The fruit of all our labours? Bananas!
I WaS delighted to read about Jason Hedges from Essex, whose 20-year-old banana tree has suddenly produced fruit (Mail). The 20-year-old tree in our back garden has also started producing bananas for the first time. My husband, Neil, waters it copiously in the summer, and in the winter he wraps it to protect it from the frost, but that’s all the special attention it gets. Even after we planted it, we never thought that bananas would grow in our climate. When it comes to British bananas, is it a case of the only way is in Essex? JULIE JESSE, Braintree, Essex.
