JACKSON IRVINE

-

Hull have made a shrewd signing by taking one of the mainstays of Burton Albion’s relatively successful squad. Most English clubs have sent scouts to Scotland less in the past few years as standards have dropped, but Burton realised if you find a nugget in the SPL, there will be less competition for him and Irvine made a seamless transition from north to south. This tall Australian had been consistently good for them prior to his move on Wednesday. He is a lean midfielder instantly recognisable as he strides through midfield with his long hair tied in a neat top bun, but it is his football skills that catch the eye. A rightfooted player, he has the vision to see a pass and the technique to deliver. He has an awareness of where his team-mates are positioned and is quick to deliver early to his strikers. His strength are his drives from midfield, as well as his eye and timing to seize an opportunity to move into the box. It is no surprise that his goalscoring record is good. More than capable in the air, he moves into positions to anticipate crosses. Having been at a club with a low budget, in a team often playing with their backs to the wall, chances were not always plentiful. But in his own box he defends well, often winning headers at the near post like Harry Kane and Diego Costa.

WHAT DOES HE NEED?

Occasionally he will play a sloppy pass but not often enough for it to be a major downside. I like his energy and tireless work. He is young and looks to have the character to improve. I shall watch his progress closely at Hull, a club who have been decimated by the likes of Sam Clucas, Harry Maguire and Andrew Robertson leaving after relegation. I have been impressed by their recent recruitment and Irvine looks a sound addition alongside Kevin Stewart from Liverpool, Wolves’ Nouha Dicko and Jon Toral of Arsenal.
