Should Theresa May fight the next election?
MANY Conservatives will be dismayed by Mrs May saying she will contest the next election (Mail). Her judgment in calling an early poll was questionable, and her campaign was flawed and alienated natural supporters, resulting in the Tories losing their majority. As Prime Minister, Mrs May has made huge mistakes, such as approving the hugely expensive Hinkley Point nuclear power station, and she is being far too soft in the Brexit negotiations.
DAVID KILPATRICK, St Albans, Herts. BravO Theresa May for deciding to stay and contest the next general election. David Cameron walked away when the referendum vote went against him. What a wimp! Mrs May deserves her chance.
STEVE JoHNSoN, address supplied. HOW has running a disastrous campaign that lost your party its overall majority become a qualification to lead it into the next General Election?
VALERIE CREWS, Beckenham, Kent. The Conservatives should get behind Mrs May. however, don’t expect Tory MPs to show much loyalty. It is true that it was Mrs May’s decision to call an election that had a disappointing outcome. But the main reason the campaign was poor was that many of her MPs showed a complete lack of interest in campaigning, thinking the outcome would be a walkover.
FRANK McMANuS, Leeds. REMOANER Lord Michael Heseltine doesn’t believe Theresa May has the staying power to be Tory leader after Brexit. Could he be right? Mrs May is lacklustre and seems to be avoiding the job of getting Britain free of the blood-sucking EU. With the clock ticking towards March 2019, Britain needs someone who won’t play the EU’s game. We need a Churchillian leader to tell the EU: ‘We’re getting the hell out of here!’
