French bank’s £35m bill

BNP Paribas is being forced to cough up £35m for the taxman after losing a courtroom battle.

The French bank had sought to avoid paying the bill by buying and selling dividends to create a fake loss – a practice known as dividend stripping.

But yesterday, a tribunal found in favour of HMRC.

The bank said: ‘We respect the decision of the tribunal.’
