Are university bosses paid too much?

-

OXFORD vice-chancellor Professor Louise Richardson is right to say her £410,000 pay and rent-free accommodation do not compare to the pay packet of a footballer (Mail). Anything to do with entertainment, no matter how banal, is paid big money, while those who make a genuine contribution can be ignored. R. HAVENHAND, Nantwich, Cheshire. FOOTBALL is an easy target for Left-wing academics, but it is wealth-creating and gives pleasure to millions. If condemning the wages of footballers is the only defence the professor has, Oxford is in trouble. J. DAVISON, Bishops Waltham, Hants. THE sky high salaries being paid to senior university staff could be dealt with easily. Student tuition fees, which soared a few years ago and are due to go up again, are clearly too high. Halving tuition fees would rein in the excesses of the jobsworths and reduce student debt. MIKE DURAND, St Buryan, Cornwall. I AM outraged that not only is Bath University vice chancellor Dame Glynis Breakwell paid £450,000 a year and lives rent-free in a £1.6million home, but gets £8,000 in expenses for laundry and housekeeping (Mail). She also claims for her gas and electricity bill and council tax, so it appears she does not pay any household bills at all. We would all like to have our bills paid by our bosses. Surely something should be done to relieve her of this extraordinary privilege. Mrs JANICE STREET, St Albans, Herts.
