THE Government has announced that German prisoners in Britain are to be repatriate­d at the rate of 15,000 a month. The first contingent of about 8,000 will leave this country at the beginning of October, and by Christmas 1948 all should be home. First priority for repatriati­on will go to non-Nazis likely to play a useful part in the restoratio­n of Germany.

SEPTEMBER 13, 1966

MR ROY JENkiNS, the Home Secretary, wants to stop the unrestrict­ed sale of shotguns. He said last night the number of indictable crimes involving these weapons had trebled between 1961 and 1965.

The Daily Mail has been campaignin­g for curbs. in March, it published an investigat­ion of their sale through mail order firms.

Named one of Britain’s most powerful women by Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour, the indian-born former easyJet boss is set to earn up to £25 million over five years as new head of iTV. She juggled her career with having three children within three years and says she has never faced discrimina­tion.

CAROL BARNES (1944-2008). The Norwichbor­n iTN newsreader was a fashion buyer for Harrods, a theatre publicist and a teacher before turning to journalism. As News At Ten host, she covered the 1981 Brixton riots while seven months pregnant and was on air for 16 hours to anchor the coverage of Princess Diana’s death. JONi SLEDGE (1956-2017). The U.S. singer (pictured) founded Sister Sledge with three of her four sisters (the eldest became a teacher). All had voice training by their operatic soprano grandmothe­r and honed their skills singing at church. Their mother, an actress, once joked they learned to sing because, as children, they were so often locked in at home to keep them safe while she worked at several waitressin­g jobs.
