Want to escape Corbyn, Brexit, Trump & Co? Here’s the £1m...

- By Richard Marsden

IF the thought of Jeremy Corbyn as prime minister-in-waiting or the prospect of Armageddon triggered by the US and North Korea makes you want to get away from it all, this could be the perfect place.

Set in glorious woodland unchanged in centuries and two miles from the nearest town, it has the added advantage of being in Devon – so Brexit voters won’t even have to leave the country.

For sale at £1.25million, Colwell Wood Cottage is on a clearing in 75 acres of land. It is part of an estate that in the 15th century belonged to Richard, Duke of Gloucester – later Richard III – and was also owned by the aristocratic de Courtenay, Hungerford and Hastings families.

The estate, near Honiton, was bought in 1793 for £1,210 by Admiral Thomas Graves, Lord Nelson’s second in command at the Battle of Copenhagen. He gave the wood to his daughter Mary and the cottage was built around 200 years ago.

It was derelict when the current owners bought it in the 1980s but is now a modernised three-bedroom home with inglenook fireplace, kitchen/breakfast room and two bathrooms. The land, which has 18 acres of bluebells and a pond, is a haven for wildlife including bats, birds, deer and butterflies.

Alex Coates of estate agents Humberts, which is handling the sale, said: ‘It’s a completely magical setting. You get to the cottage down this lovely long track, not a lot has been changed there in 500 years.

‘It is like you’re in your own little enchanting world. It would appeal to someone who wants somewhere completely away from it all.’
