Lthe world championship leader was asked about the controversy over nFl players kneeling during the american national anthem to highlight racial discrimination, acts of defiance that drew criticism from President trump. the mercedes man hinted he might find his own way of displaying solidarity with the campaigners.

Hamilton gave no specifics, possibly looking to the US Grand Prix on october 22, but added: ‘ I think there are opportunities all over Formula one.

‘It is open for anyone to have freedom of speech and I guess we can all play a role in trying to make a difference in the world — particularly if your leader is not helping in that area.

‘It requires people to stand together. I can identify with a lot of those individuals.’

Hamilton also revealed for the first time that he will walk away from motor racing when his Formula one career ends. there will be no fling on america ovals as many had thought likely, and as his father, anthony, once suggested might lie in the future.

‘there’s no other series that I am aiming to drive in,’ said Hamilton ahead of Sunday’s malaysian Grand Prix. ‘that is a shame. I wish I did have more passion, to do IndyCar, or le mans, or something. But there’s nothing else. But I’ll always own fast cars. my whole life has been in motor racing so it’s difficult tto iimaginei it nott bbeingi ini my liflife. I have a lot more time to watch.

‘and I’ll probably attend more motoGP races and other sports I admire like nBa. But in terms of racing I don’t think so. Racing for fun? I don’t think so. I’m so competitive I’d always want to win.’

Hamilton, 32, looks likely to be around will ill for many more years despite admitting that retirement has crossed his mind. now, though, he says he is enjoying racing more than ever.

He is edging towards signing a new deal at mercedes to take him beyond his current contract that expires at the end of next season.

‘It is useful to have a couple of aces in your pocket to help your bargaining position,’ he said, referring to his three consecutive wins and all- round blistering form.

He may have another contract in him beyond his next one at mercedes, with Ferrari an alluring possibility.

But for now Hamilton is intent on stopping the Prancing Horse and their star driver, Sebastian Vettel, who trails him by 28 points with six rounds remaining. the gap opened wide after Vettel crashed at the start of the last race in Singapore — a three- car collision for which Hamilton blamed the German.

‘I don’t know how he’s taken it — the mistake in the last race,’ said Hamilton. ‘and I don’t know how it has affected his mind. time will tell whether he feels pressure.’
