A recliner chair can be built just for you

-

THE dentist’s chair, invented in 1790, is hailed as the first recliner. But modern recliner chairs didn’t take off until the 1920s, when people discovered the new level of comfort they offered. At the touch of a button, backs could be supported and feet could be raised, and the effects of medical conditions such as osteoporosis and arthritis could be eased. Today one size does not fit all, so it’s best to find a company that will build a bespoke model from scratch, based on your needs, body type and measurements. A rise and recline chair is a favourite option. It is a recliner with a motorised mechanism that pushes the chair up from its base, making it easier to get up from the seat. Even more advanced is a ‘tilt-in-space’ mechanism, which maintains the angle of your back as it tilts, allowing you to raise your legs to around the same level as the heart — helpful for those who need to elevate their legs because of swelling, for example. A built-in massage system can provide a form of pain relief and also relieve symptoms of various circulatory conditions, such as cramps and water retention. For problems such as arthritis or osteoporosis, a heat pad fitted to the lower lumbar section will help to soothe pain. And on some chairs you can even adjust the firmness of the lumbar region to meet your needs, using the handset. There is plenty of choice around. But to be absolutely sure you will have a chair for life, go bespoke rather than off the shelf.
