Woody: I fear this will be a witch hunt
HIS son was responsible for exposing the worst of Weinstein.
But Woody Allen said he feels ‘sad’ for the movie mogul – and he fears a ‘witch hunt’ atmosphere could develop.
The controversial director, who has battled his own sexual allegations in the past, worked with Weinstein several times.
He told the BBC: ‘The whole Harvey Weinstein thing is very sad for everybody involved. Tragic for the poor women that were involved, sad for Harvey that is life is so messed up.
‘No one ever came to me or told me horror stories with any real seriousness.
‘But you do hear a million fanciful rumours all the time. And some turn out to be true and some, many, are just stories about this actress, or that actor.’
Allen, 1, said he hoped the revelations would lead to ‘some amelioration’ but added: ‘You also don’t want it to lead to a witch hunt atmosphere, a Salem atmosphere, where every guy in an office who winks at a woman is suddenly having to call a lawyer to defend himself. That’s not right either.’
Allen’s son Ronan Farrow, 29, who is estranged from his father, was responsible for exposing the ugliest allegations against Weinstein in an article for the New Yorker magazine.
