1930 Born in Suffolk, the son of a trawlerman. 1950s After a brief driving career in lower categories, becomes manager of British F1 driver Stuart Lewis-Evans, who dies in a crash in 1958. 1960s Returns as manager of Austrian Jochen Rindt, who is also killed in 1970. 1970s Buys F1 team Brabham before suggesting teams allow him to negotiate TV rights for the sport. Convinces TV companies to buy F1 as a package rather than pay for individual races. 2000 Buys commercial rights to F1 until 2110 for a one-off fee, a steal at $360m. 2007 Becomes part-owner of Queens Park Rangers before selling in 2011. 2017 Forced out of F1 by Liberty Media’s takeover.
