THE taste of Chardonnay depends so much on where it’s made and what the winemaker does to it. If you liked butterscotch as a child, you’ll love this South African wine. Made from grapes from the Stellenbosch region, it’s a steal.

WHITE WINE

Leaf Plucker Sauvignon Blanc 2016, £6.99, Aldi

LOVE this gorgeous Sauvignon Blanc from the Western Cape of South Africa. The leaf pluckers are sheep, who nibble leaves off the vines, so the grapes get more sun. Refreshingly punchy with passion fruit and citrus characters.

Salmon fillets.

RED WINE

Majestic Loves Montepulciano 2016, £5.99 mix six price (normally £6.99), Majestic

THIS is the kind of no-fuss red you need when there’s nothing but you, tomato sauce-drenched pasta and a box set to think about. It’s also a real crowdpleaser so just the thing for unexpected guests. Brilliantly bright and juicy.

SPARKLING WINE

Morrisons The Best Vintage Cava Brut, £7

WHEN it comes to great value bubbles, it’s hard to beat cava when it’s this good. Made from classic Spanish grapes, it balances a light toasty character with green apple flavours. Made in the same way as champagne, it’s great for special occasions — including that stay-at-home Friday night!
