VIENNESE WALTZ FOR EDMUND
KYLE EDMUND beat Spain’s David Ferrer in straight sets to reach the second round of tennis’s Erste Bank Open in Vienna yesterday. Edmund (above), 22, beat former world No 3 Ferrer 6-2, 7-6 in an hour and 48 minutes, progressing to the last 16 by taking his second match point in a hard-fought tie-break. Next up for Edmund, the world No 63, is a clash with Austria’s world No 284 Dennis Novak. Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic will make his return to the sport in Abu Dhabi at December’s World Tennis Championship. The Serb, a 12-time Grand Slam winner, has been out since abandoning his Wimbledon quarter-final against Tomas Berdych in July with an elbow injury.
