4 months on, the acid attack victim ready to face the world
JUST four months after suffering a horrific acid attack, this courageous student has shared a picture of her remarkable recovery – declaring ‘it’s time to stop hiding’.
Resham Khan was attacked on her 21st birthday while in a car with her cousin Jameel Muhktar, 37, who also suffered severe burns to his face and body.
She has since written emotional blog posts telling how her dreams of being a model have been destroyed.
In the days after the attack in June she posted pictures online showing the severe injuries to her face, neck and shoulder.
But yesterday she revealed the progress of her recovery to her 20,000 followers on Twitter.
Many praised her bravery, with one writing: ‘ You are so lovely, so brave, so compassionate despite all you’ve been through.’
In the days after the attack in Beckton, east London, Miss Khan told how the pain of her injuries had left her struggling.
In her initial posts, she wrote: ‘My plans are in pieces; my pain is unbearable, and I write this letter in hospital whilst I patiently wait for the return of my face.’ She added: ‘Currently, I have two main priorities: to make a full recovery and to make sure no one ever goes through the living nightmare I have endured.’
In another blog post she described having her burns continually treated with a ‘body jet spray’ and how she had to have several skin grafts. She also said her injuries had left her too scared to go out, although she was ‘thankful’ that her face was ‘mainly intact’.
In September, she shared selfies of her dressed up for the festival of Eid. ‘Of course my face isn’t what it was, the images show mainly one side,’ she wrote. The business management student, from Manchester, is now campaigning for tighter laws to prevent acid attacks.
John Tomlin, 25, of Canning Town, East London, has been arrested over the attack.
He has pleaded guilty to two counts of inflicting grievous bodily harm but not guilty to two charges of causing GBH with intent.
He is due to go on trial on November 27.
