Notts County have been ordered to pay John sheridan £125,000 after the club’s former boss won an appeal against the grounds for his dismissal.

sheridan was sacked in January after County lost nine league games in a row. the League two club claimed he was shown the door for gross misconduct after he was hit with a five- match touchline ban for an X-rated tirade at officials during one of those defeats, rather than poor form.

sheridan, backed by the League Managers Association, launched an appeal against his sacking, claiming gross misconduct was not the sole reason.

Following an arbitration hearing in nottingham, the club were ordered to pay up. should they fail to do so, sheridan can pursue County Court action.

the FA made public sheridan’s comments towards referee Eddie Ilderton and fourth official Matthew Donohue during a December match with Wycombe.

‘you’re a f****** c***,’ sheridan said to Donohue, before shouting at Ilderton: ‘My kids aren’t going to get any f****** Christmas presents because of f****** you.’

Local businessman Alan Hardy, who took over notts County at the start of the year, reacted angrily when he learned sheridan had lodged an appeal.

But the arbitration panel in nottingham decided in sheridan’s favour. the LMA highlighted that sheridan’s dismissal on January 2 came 23 days and five games after the incident at Wycombe.

After his dismissal, sheridan returned to former club oldham Athletic, who he led to League one safety before leaving following a poor start to the season.

sheridan, the LMA and notts County declined to comment.
