FREEVIEW MOVIE Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, 9pm, E4

A SIGNIFICAN­T reboot of the sci-fi franchise after Tim Burton’s so-so 2001 effort. Scientist Will Rodman (James Franco) tries to cure Alzheimer’s with the help of some test chimps and a drug that raises the intelligen­ce of ape Caesar (Andy Serkis). Excellent animal effects, and the human story is well-told.

LOW-KEY COMEDY Detectoris­ts,, 10pm,p, BBC4

PART two of this comedy’s new series is full of well-observed conversati­ons, between Lance and Andy (Toby Jones and Mackenzie Crook, pictured) and between Lance and a hypnothera­pist, whom he drives up the wall with his wittering. It’s so nice to have this series back, especially when the quality has remained so high.

POLITICAL SPINNER Scandal, 10pm, Sky Living

IN EPISODE one of the final season, Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington, pictured) is the puppet master behind the Presidency, but where will she be by its finale? Twisted and regretful, like her father? Or queen of the entire world? Tonight Olivia faces a crisis, while former protegee Quinn runs her old firm into the ground.
