SO, WHO’S ON THE PLANE … AND WHO’S ON THE BEACH?
With just two more friendlies before Gareth Southgate picks his World Cup squad, ADAM CRAFTON assesses who can book their tickets, whose hopes are in the balance and who can head for a sun lounger...
JOE HART
Under growing pressure from Jordan Pickford and Jack Butland, but Hart has started 11 of Southgate’s 14 matches and he justified his selection with smart second-half reflexes.
KYLE WALKER
He has improved under Pep Guardiola at City and will edge ahead of former Spurs team-mate Kieran Trippier at the World Cup. Handled Neymar and Marcelo admirably.
HARRY MAGUIRE
Southgate admires Maguire’s blend of silk and steel but it has been a testing start to his Leicester career and he was the least convincing of England’s back three here and against Germany.
JOHN STONES
This season’s outstanding defender, he is the one guaranteed starter at the heart of England’s defence. Pep Guardiola is turning him into the defender we hoped he would become.
JOE GOMEZ
A rare example of a young English talent receiving opportunities, he has made 10 starts for Liverpool this season and is versatile. Another confident display here.
RYAN BERTRAND
Barring the unexpected resurrection of Luke Shaw, Bertrand will be the back-up choice for Danny Rose in Russia. No thrills but no spills. Ahead of Aaron Cresswell and Kieran Gibbs. ERIC DIER Mauricio Pochettino thinks he will eventually become a defender but Dier fancies himself as a holding midfielder. Protected the defence well here and certain to start in Russia.
RUBEN LOFTUS-CHEEK
Thrilling debut against Germany but forced off by injury after 35 minutes last night. Kept discipline as England chased shadows early on but will need to make a big impact at Palace.
JAKE LIVERMORE
A decent Premier League midfielder but that is the extent of it. Behind Harry Winks, Jordan Henderson and Adam Lallana in the race for a midfield position.
MARCUS RASHFORD
Eight goals for the season and carries his fearless form for Manchester United into England games. We must hope Rashford, Dele Alli and Harry Kane strike up a real understanding.
JAMIE VARDY
Early foul on Dani Alves might have spelled trouble in a competitive game. But his bite and direct running offers a unique threat. Turns 31 in January but his pace is undiminished.
