40% of trans women in jail are sex offenders
NEARLY half the transgender women in English prisons are convicted sex offenders, according to a report.
Of the 113 previously-male transgender prisoners, 41 per cent were jailed for sexual offences, said the Fair Play for Women organisation.
At the moment ‘trans-identifying males’ can only be legally recognised as women if they have been medically diagnosed with gender dysphoria and have lived as women for two years.
However, campaigners are concerned that proposals to ease the rules would allow people to ‘self-declare’ themselves as the opposite gender will make it easier for sexual predators to be put into female prisons.
Of the 113 prisoners identified, 100 are in male prisons.
The Ministry of Justice insists it has no intention of changing the rules.
