ANSWERS

1) B. Sandro Botticelli. Sir Norman Hartnell, who designed Princess Elizabeth’s ivory silk gown, said he aimed to create ‘the most beautiful dress I had so far made’. He was inspired by the Renaissance painting Primavera, by Botticelli. The dress, decorated with crystals and 10,000 seed pearls, was, according to the Royal Collection, intended to symbolise ‘rebirth and growth after the war’, with a 15ft starpatterned train woven in Essex. Rationing was still in force, so the Princess collected clothing coupons to pay for her outfit.

2) TRUE. The two parties were at the Dorchester hotel and the Belfry Club in London. Reporters were invited to the first, where Philip’s friend Commander Mike Parker was said to have asked the press pack to hand over their cameras and pose for a picture. After the cameras flashed, Parker issued a command and the stags threw the flashbulbs at the wall, to stop photographers sneaking any further snaps following the official photocall.

3) B. Princess Margaret and Anthony Armstrong- Jones: More than 20 million people tuned in to watch it in May 1960.

4) A. Princess Elizabeth’s was 9ft tall.

C. Princess Anne’s was 5ft 6in: the same height as the bride.

B. Although it was made up of eight tiers, Will and Kate’s cake measured just over 3ft. 5) C. Diana Spencer

6) FALSE. Their list contained no gifts whatsoever. Instead, they asked guests and well-wishers to choose from a list of 26 charities and make a donation in one of six currencies via a website. William’s mother, Diana, had explained her need for a wedding list 30 years earlier, saying: ‘We’ve got two houses to fill.’
