ITALIAN champions Juventus lost 3-2 to Sampdoria as Massimiliano Allegri dropped Gianluigi Buffon and started Wojciech Szczesny in goal instead. Allegri revealed he rested 39-year-old Buffon because the veteran was still too disappointed from Italy’s failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. Without Buffon, who has now retired from international football, the Serie A giants went 3-0 down before scoring twice in stoppage time. Despite Gonzalo Higuain and Paulo Dybala’s late goals, Juve could not complete a full comeback. The surprise loss leaves them four points off leaders Napoli. A stoppage-time strike from Sassuolo saw Benevento lose for the 13th time in succession in Serie A. They have zero points and a minus-27 goal difference. In Spain, Valencia secured a clubrecord eighth successive La Liga win to stay hot on the heels of Barcelona. They saw off Espanyol 2-0 while Barca beat Leganes 3-0 with two goals from Luis Suarez and a third from Paulinho. Barcelona are four points ahead of Valencia and 10 ahead of Real and Atletico after the Madrid derby finished 0-0 on Saturday. Bayern Munich secured a simple 3-0 win over Augsburg with two goals from Robert Lewandowski. Their Bundesliga lead is six points after RB Leipzig drew 2-2 with 10-man Bayer Leverkusen. PSG also enjoy a six-point lead in Ligue 1 after Edinson Cavani scored twice in an easy 4-1 win over Nantes.
